CIRCOLOMBIA (COLOMBIA)
Wednesday 13 March - Sunday 17 March, 2013
The Civic, Auckland
One of the most revolutionary circus experiences to hit the country opens at The Civic on 13 March. URBAN, by Circolombia, is a high-voltage circus-theatre production, exploding with gravity-defying stunts and astonishing acrobatics. Following a sell-out run at London's Roundhouse, in New York and extended seasons in Paris, the Colombian troupe's gritty, no-holds-barred, autobiographical show comes to Auckland Arts Festival 2013 for its exclusive New Zealand season.
The freestylin' Circolombia performers execute astounding and frightening feats with a prowess that is raw, volcanic and incredibly honest.  Jumping, somersaulting, flying through skipping ropes, propelled to the top of three-man-high towers, tumbling and breakdancing, the performers tell astonishing stories of life on the streets of Cali, Colombia, a city of joy and volatility where dance and music are the safety valves of everyday life. A soundtrack of Latin rap and hip-hop makes URBAN a circus-opera that is full of attitude.
URBAN features some of the best performers from Circo Para Todos (Circus For All), Colombia's national circus school and one of the world's first professional circus schools for disadvantaged young people. Circo Para Todos was established by Felicity Simpson, a former circus performer from Britain who set up the school in 1997, allowing the young performers an opportunity to transcend their difficult backgrounds in the most spectacular way: as world-class artists on stage. 50 per cent of Circolombia's profits go back into funding the school.
Felicity Simpson said, "It was time to unleash the force of youth, an energy field touching the whole theatre, to the last seats and back. Here is the difference - they don't act, they come alive onstage to make their "circo concierto". All the energy from the street explodes: a mix of what they have learned in the school and lived in their lives. They express themselves through their own specific language, putting together acrobatic circus skills and live singing reggaeton. It's a risky, raw, edgy show, just as their life experience is in Cali."
URBAN was originally commissioned by Roundhouse London as part of CircusFest. The group has received a Bronze Medal from the Wuhan Acrobatic Art Festival in China and many of the performers have solo medals.
Auckland Arts Festival welcomes people of all ages to experience the thrill of URBAN.
