Rhinoceros in Love leaves traditional Chinese theatre
somewhere in its dust.
Weaving between tragedy and comedy, Rhinoceros in Love
sketches out the tale of rhinoceros-keeper Ma Lu, a man who
develops a dangerous romantic fascination with the woman of his
dreams: his neighbor, the uncompromising and unobtainable Mingming.
Ma has done everything to win her heart, but is overwhelmed by deep
desperation. One night, Ma, mad and stubborn as a rhinoceros,
kidnaps Mingming in the name of love. The rhinoceros with its poor
vision serves as a metaphor for those who are deeply in love and
blinded by the sadness of unrequited love.
The play employs symbolism, metaphors, satire, as well as pop
songs and a waterfall "stage spectacular", breaking a decades-old
tradition of Chinese drama dominated by simple performances.
Despite early criticism, the drama was an immediate success
artistically and commercially, and is considered a milestone in the
development of Chinese experimental drama.
