Hugh Masekela is a musician with a real soul. He has a genuine warm, charismatic, and simple way of building special relationships, both with his fellow musicians and with an audience.
London Jazz
Spend an evening with the High Priest of Afrobeat and the
voice of South African music.
Hugh Masekela has a groove shaped by a lifetime in music and
political activism. Telling the story of South Africa with his
horn, he moves with the energy and enthusiasm of a 20-year-old and
sings with a spirit that will rock your soul.
Famous for bringing Afrobeat out of Africa, Hugh is most
familiar to New Zealanders for appearances alongside Ladysmith
Black Mambazo, Miriam Makeba and Paul Simon on the tour of Simon's
Grammy-Award winning Graceland album. Inflected with the
sounds of jazz luminaries such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and
Louis Armstrong and the hard-driving Afrobeat of Fela Kuti,
Masekela's music will get you going.
Beat a path to this full-on night of infectious rhythms from the
townships of South Africa.
# In a nutshell: Afrobeats, seductive harmonies, inspiring and
infectious rhythms.
