Wednesday 6 - Sunday 24 March, 2013
NEW ZEALAND'S OWN SPIEGELTENT IN AOTEA SQUARE
From 6-24 March, groovers and shakers are invited to swing along to Auckland Arts Festival's Festival Club which will take up residence in the Festival Garden in Aotea Square for the entire Festival. Audiences can tap into the good-time vibe in New Zealand's very own spiegeltent and experience a line up of superb performers from the international circuit, including cult cabaret Cantina, The Magnets, Stochelo Rosenberg Trio, Novalima and LA33.
Both before the show and after the final encore, audiences are welcome to linger in the Festival Garden and soak up the pre and post show buzz...
CANTINA (AUSTRALIA)
The darkly seductive Cantina offers breathtaking acrobatics, optical illusion, titillating tightrope, intimate encounters and high, high heels. Set in a 1930s underground circus-cabaret, Cantina blurs reality and fantasy with in-your-face vaudeville, faded glamour, cocktails and suspense, all topped off with a madcap live soundtrack performed on antiquated instruments. Co-created with six highly-skilled circus and physical theatre performers from Circus Oz, Acrobat, Tom Tom Crew, Circa and Circus Cirkor, and set amid a hazy blur of reality and fantasy, in Cantina the fine line between pleasure and pain is never quite clear.
THE MAGNETS (GREAT BRITAIN)
Hot from crazy-good tours in India and Australia, and a cluster of five-star reviews at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, must-see ultra a capella stars, The Magnets, will bring it to the Festival Club. Making all their music with their voices alone, including the drums of beat-boxer Andy Frost and the richly textured bass of Fraser Collins, The Magnets are much-admired for their exciting arrangements that radically restyle and subvert popular songs from artists as diverse as Kraftwerk, Beyoncé, Led Zeppelin, Lady Gaga and Tears for Fears. They will also do a special New Zealand set.
STOCHELO ROSENBERG TRIO (THE NETHERLANDS)
When Stochelo Rosenberg picks up his guitar, you would swear he's channelling the Belgian jazz master, Django Reinhardt. With brother Mozes and classically-trained, gypsy jazz-lovin' Joel Locher, The Stochelo Rosenberg Trio strum up a veritable storm of jazz, hot-club and gypsy guitar. Together this exciting trio offers a crossfire of unbelievable solos, breathtaking rhythms and constant invention.
NOVALIMA (PERU)
Afro-Peruvian ensemble Novalima's new world blend of dub, reggae, electronica and Latin beats has mesmerised audiences the world over. Their latest album, Karimba, topped iTunes' world-music chart and made Billboard's world-music Top 10.  Novalima promises to have Festival Club-goers dancing in the aisles.
LA -33 (COLOMBIA)
LA-33s urban, gritty dance music complete with storming horn section has had crowds across the globe stampeding the dance floor. The band mixes retro salsa dura (hard salsa) with classic cumbrai, ska, Latin jazz and old school New York Boogaloo.
Also in the Festival Garden will be a special programme of activities on Family Day, Sunday 24 March. Visit aaf.co.nz in February 2013 for entertainment updates at the Festival Garden and Club.
